GRAYLING, Mich. – Michigan and Illinois National Guard units move into their final week of annual training this week, in which over 3,500 soldiers are training to improve their tactical and technical proficiencies. The sound of weapons firing will continue in South Camp, Range 13 Complex, the Range 30/Multipurpose Range Complex (MPRC) and Range 40 Complex, Artillery and Air-to-Ground ranges.
“South Camp” small arms ranges will be the primary focus of training from Range 1-18 military units. Expect to hear small arms fire, and occasional loud explosions from light to heavy demolition during the entire week.
The Range 30 Complex training is all blank fire within the fence line, allowing for ALL ROADS and trails from Stephen Bridge Road east to Bald Hill Road will be OPEN to civilian traffic.
Air Force A-10’s will practice aerial gunnery on the Air to Ground Range MON-THU, with night firing occurring on Thursday evening. Range 45 Machinegun and other weapon systems will also be live firing from through the weekend. Thus, portions of affected roads and trails Range 40 Complex will be CLOSED for public safety.
Howe’s Lake was busy last week with waterborne and bridging operations that may have temporarily displaced some civilians to ensure that maintained a safe distance from military training. Camp Grayling Commander Scott Meyer’s appreciates the support and flexibility of the community with the increased traffic and presence of soldiers throughout the community.
It is of utmost importance to keep our community safe at all times. Even with the recent rain, fire danger remains high so always check with the DNR before starting any fires.
